Pilates was developed by Joseph Pilates, who initially developed exercises that were done on a Mat. He called his program “Contrology” and stated “You’re only as old as your spine.” A flexible spine is the key to all of life’s activities and keeping the spine flexible is at the very heart of Pilates. Joseph coined the word “Powerhouse” referring to the muscles of the abdomen, back, hips and buttocks. All of the exercises utilize the Powerhouse in some form.
This is a practice that can be enjoyed by anybody regardless of physical conditioning, it can be practiced anytime and anywhere while standing, sitting or lying down. At the start of the practice the focus is finding the deep abdominals and learning how to activate them as the limbs are moved. As one progresses in the practice, you’ll notice a lengthening of the body, increased range of movement, improved posture and balance. The breath is an integral part of the practice enhancing the mind-body connection and calming the nervous system.
